completely by the EPC. They would like to invite you to take part in the
contest, the rules and other information can be found on the Web site
at: www.cisdx.srars.org
Please check the rules as there are important changes. It is strictly a
QPSK63 contest now, no other modes are allowed. The maximum output power
is 100 watts. Georgia has been removed from the CIS Regions List. Moldova
now has only 4 regions (MD01, MD02, MD03, and MD04). Kyrgyzstan has new
additional territorial unit - Osh City (KG09). Please do not confuse this
list with their EU Areas list, this is a completely different story.

QSL INFO AND NEWS…………………
Franz, DK1II (ex-7O1YGF), announced this past week (August 17th) that
he uploaded the 7O1YGF log to LoTW. He states, “Thanks to Bernd, DF3CB,
for helping with the log conversion!”

CLEARING THE CONFUSION (ON FEE SUBMISSION) FOR THE 7O1YGF QSL! Wayne
Mills, N7NG, reported this week: “There appears to be some confusion
over the fees charged for submitting 7O1YGF cards. Here’s the story,
verified by Ms. Sharon Taratula at ARRL:
THERE IS NO 12.00 USDs APPLICATION FEE FOR SUBMITTING ONLY 7O1YGF
CARDS VIA A LOTW APPLICATION.
This fact was mentioned in the release, but perhaps it was not entirely
clear:
‘If you select only the 7O1YGF QSOs you will not be assessed the fees
that LoTW will report back to you. If you choose other QSOs a regular
submission fee will apply;’
The fees mentioned above are both credit fees and DXCC application fees.
Just IGNORE any fees reported on your application as long as you don’t
submit anything other than 7O1YGF credits.” 73, Wayne, N7NG

MORE 7O1YGF SUBMISSION CLARIFICATION. Bill Moore, NC1L, Awards Branch
Manager, reported on Friday, August 21st: “The 7O1YGF-ONLY submission
is free. LoTW notes a submission fee (automatically) and I have no
control over this. When I process the submission the fee is waived.
The ‘payment by mail’ notation is to avoid having the fee being charged,
accidentally. If you click ‘payment by mail’ you do not need to enter
your credit card information.
Note: This free submission offer will end on December 31, 2009. After
this, applicants can include 7O1YGF with their regular 2010 submission.”

7P8AO QSL POLICY. Pista, HA5AO (one of the operators of the 7P8AO Lesotho
operation), states: “I will send my QSL cards of my Lesotho operation for
direct request, only. Please send SAE with 2 USDs and up. Please no IRCs.
All the cash will be transferred to the Leratong Community Centre, Roma,
Lesotho, to support the orphans and vulnerable children. I will upload
the QSOs to the LoTW when I receive your direct request, only. The
expenses of printing the cards and the post fee of the return QSL card
will be covered by my own. Thank you for your kind understanding, and
hoping your support.” For more details, see: ha5ao.novolab.hu

ET3JA BUREAU QSLS. Milan, OK3AA, the QSL Manager for Josef, ET3JA
(OK1XV), informs OPDX that by the time you read this, ET3JA will have

3B7, ST. BRANDON ISLAND. Ron, K5XK, updates OPDX that Rachid, 3B8FQ,
will leave Mauritius by boat on Tuesday, August 11th, enroute for St.
Brandon (AF-015). Rachid will operate solo as 3B7FQ from August 12th
through the end of the month–and possibly a few extra days in early
September. Look for him on all bands, 30-10 meters, although Rachid
expects 40 and 20 meters to be most productive. He will use both CW
and SSB, as conditions allow. As in Rachid’s earlier travels to 3B6
and 3B7, operating time will be shared with his primary mission of
performing maintenance on the island’s meteorological equipment. He
expects to use the island’s G5RV and a vertical with a 100 watt trans-
ceiver powered by a 12 volt battery that will be charged daily. Rachid
likes to use “the 8s” whenever possible on CW. Here are his anticipated
frequencies:
CW - 7008, 10108, 14008, 18078, 21008, 24898 and 28008 kHz
SSB - 7050, 14191, 18141, 21241, 24941 and 28491 kHz

If future plans come together, Rachid may operate from 3B9 sometime
after his return and hopes to operate from 3B6 again in November. QSL
via K5XK, direct preferred.

3D2/C, CONWAY REEF (Update). Jan, DJ8NK, informs OPDX this past week

run 4 stations simultaneously in order to serve the pile-up. They have
also announced their callsign for the operation - 3D20CR. The callsign
of this DXpedition was issued to commemorate a DXpedition 20 years ago
when DK9KX as organizer and leader of a crew, which included today’s
member DJ9ON, visited this island for the first activation ever. The
DXpedition is still looking for sponsors. The total amount of the operation
is estimated at 64.000 USDs. For details/updates and on how to donate
funds for this operation, please visit their Web page at:
www.conwayreef2009.de

CQ NEWS. A press release by Richard Moseson, W2VU, Editor of CQ Amateur
Radio, dated August 4th, states: “2008 CQ World Wide CW Contest Marks
Major Milestone for K0DQ Becomes Possibly the Only Person Ever to Win
All Six Major Ham Radio Contests — Scott Redd, K0DQ, operating the 2008
CW weekend of the CQ World Wide DX Contest from Aruba as P40Q, racked up
over a million more points than his closest competitor in the Single-
Operator Low Power Class, and became perhaps the only person ever to win
single-op world championships in all six major Ham Radio DX contests.
‘I don’t know of anyone else’ who has won all the major contests, said
CQWW Contest Director Bob Cox, K3EST, in announcing the results, which
will be published in the September issue of ‘CQ’ magazine.
Scott had his first taste of contest victory back in 1966, as a young
Navy officer posted to Uruguay and operating CX2CO in the phone weekend
of the CQ World Wide DX Contest. Over the succeeding years, Scott worked
his way through the Navy ranks to Vice Admiral and became Commander of
the Fifth Fleet, then served as a civilian in the Iraq Coalition
Provisional Authority and as Director of the National Counter terrorism
Center before retiring in late 2007. But Ham Radio and contesting were
never far away, and operating from Mexico as XE1IIJ in the early 1970s,
Scott won single-op world championships in the CQWW Phone Contest, the
ARRL DX Phone and CW Contests and the CQ WPX Phone Contest. Thirty years
later, when his professional life permitted a little more hamming time,
Scott added the WPX CW crown as P41P, operating from P43P’s station in
Aruba, in 2002. The only prize that eluded him — until now — was the
CQWW CW.
‘I’ve been trying like a son-of-a-gun to win (the) CQ World Wide CW,’
Scott commented in a 2008 interview with ‘CQ’. ‘I’ve come in number two,
I’ve come in number three, but I’ve never won that one…. so that’s
still my goal, every time I get close, in CQ World Wide CW, to win the
world.’
When informed that he had finally achieved that goal, K0DQ said, ‘I
guess the message is if you keep at it long enough good things happen.
In this case, four decades. It’s been a great ride … and it’s still
magic!’
CQ congratulates Scott — already a member of the CQ Amateur Radio
Hall of Fame, for his contesting achievements on top of all his other
achievements.”

on the peak day of August 12th. The Web site is reporting that, “According
to NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office, a filament of comet dust has
drifted across Earth’s path, and when Earth passes through it sometime
between 0800-0900z (1-2 am PDT) on August 12th, the Perseid meteor rate
could surge to twice its normal value. Check
for details and observing tips.” The peak hourly rate could reach 200

with some SSB. QSL via LZ1PJ, direct or by the Bureau. E-mail requests
for Bureau cards are accepted ( via lz1pj[kringelis]bfra[taskas]org ). Write QSO details
and callsign worked, since Ivan, LZ1PJ, manages other callsigns too.
PLEASE NOTE: LZ01WFF is used for activation for other WFF references
by other operators. Ivan, LZ1PJ, will manage this activation only. For
other activations listen to operator’s instructions.

WFF enthusiasts (5 to 10 operators), plan to activate the Biosphere
Reserve “Steneto” (LZFF-017) in the National Park “Central Balkan”
(LZFF-001) between August 20-24th. Activity will be on all HF bands,

XR0, EASTER ISLAND. An international team of operators will be active as
XR0YA from Rapa Nui between October 31st and November 15th. This will be
a lite and small DXpedition with 6 operators. Operators mentioned are:
Marco/CE6TBN, Leszek/NI1L, Aart/PA3C Zbig/SP7HOV, Stan/SQ8X and Victoria/
SV2KBS. Although Easter Island is no longer among the “100 Top Most Wanted
DXCC Entities”, it is still most wanted on some bands such as 30 meters
and any activity on this band is very seldom due to a fact a special,
temporary license submitted by Chilean Ministry of Telecommunication is
obligatory. The group has obtained a license for all bands, and they
decided to dedicate their DXpedition to 30 meters (CW section only! Digi-
modes on 30m are not allowed in Chile), and 160, 80 and 40 meters. The
group thanks the support from “Radio Club de Chile” to help obtain and
have this unique opportunity to activate Rapa Nui on 30 meters. A QSL
route has not been announced yet, but it will be shortly. They plan to
use an “Online QSL Request System” (OQRS) for direct requests and also
the standard QSLing via direct and bureau options. Their logs will be
uploaded to the LoTW after the DXpedition after some period of time.
They will NOT nor plan to use eQSL. For more details and update, visit

for up to three cards per envelope. If you send International Reply
Coupons (IRC), please make sure that it is not expired or is not
about to expire. DO NOT SEND IRCs that are valid only until end of

Tamas Pekarik, Alagi ut 15, H-2151 Fot, HUNGARY

* The preferred way is using the “Online QSL Request Service” (OQRS)
on their Web site which they will launch once the DXpedition is
over. You can use that form to request your direct QSL and cover
the costs of sending the QSL card to you direct by using PayPal.
They request a minimum of 5 USDs or 4 EUROs for this service.

* LoTW and eQSL: The log will be placed onto the LoTW and eQSL systems.

* Bureau: They will launch an “Online QSL Request Service” (OQRS) on
their Web site as soon as the expedition is over. If you want to
receive your QSL via the bureau, please use that form to request
the card. They will check your QSOs against the log and send your
card to you via the bureau. This method will allow them faster
processing, helps them protect the environment and you will receive
your TX3A card faster. If you request your bureau card online, please
do NOT request a direct card and do NOT send us your QSL card.

MM0DFV: 7.000 km across Europe and Asia:
—————————————-
Jurij,MM0DFV, started his 7000 km trip across Europe and Asia on July 7. He
has a mobile HF radio and will try to become active from several countries:
GM - Scotland as MM0DFV/m,
G - England as M0DFV/m,
F - France as F/MM0DFV/m,
ON - Belgium as ON/MM0DFV/m,
DL - Germany as DL/MM0DFV/m,
SP - Poland as SP/MM0DFV/m,
EU - Belarus (call unknown),
UA - Russia (call upon arrival) and
UN - Kazakhstan probably as UN/RN3FX.
He will work mainly in PSK and plans to send different QSL cards from every
country. He plans to be back in Scotland on Aug 10.

Less activity by 4U1ITU in the future:
————————————–
Gerald Lander,HB9AJU, states that the callsign 4U1ITU will be put on the air
only very seldom in the upcoming future. The restricted activities are the
result of a general assembly of the International Amateur Radio Clubs IARC
in May. Several reasons led to this decision including increased security
levels at the ITU headquarters, a changed recognition of amateur radio in
international communication and last not least that 4U1ITU is not belonging
to the most wanted countries anymore. The IARC decided to focus their
activities on special modes or conference delegates and to limit all
overnight and weekend activities as much as possible. Finally the new
antennas were installed on top of the Varembe building. You can see them at:
public.fotki.com/sparky73/any/ham_radio/4u1itu-200……

Edited by I1JQJ & IK1ADH
Direttore Responsabile I2VGW

3B7 - Rachid, 3B8FQ has received approval and will be active as 3B7FQ
from St. Brandon Island (AF-015) in August. This may be his last
visit to 3B7 for the next five years. It will be a working trip,
with time shared for maintenance on the island’s meteorological
equipment. He will depart Mauritius on 10 August and return from
St. Brandon on the 30th. Operation will be SSB and CW on 40-10
metres. QSL via K5XK. [TNX K5XK]

3D2_cr - Conway Reef (OC-112) was activated for the first time in April
1989 by 3D2CR. Twenty years after that event, Hawa, DK9KX (ex
3D2CR) will return to Ceva-I-Ra along with six other operators
(namely Norbert/DJ7JC, Jan/DJ8NK, Dieter/DJ9ON, Heye/DJ9RR,
Hans/DL6JGN and Ron/PA3EWP). They plan to be active between 1 and
10 October, depending on weather conditions, and to operate SSB,
CW, RTTY and PSK on 160-6 metres. The callsign will be announced
when the operation starts. QSL via DJ8NK, direct or bureau. A web
page is under construction. [TNX DJ8NK]

3W - In March 2008 XV3M (F6BUM) activated IOTA group AS-185, but was
able to make only 577 QSOs under difficult circumstances [425DXN
886]. Those who did not work Jack will be given a new chance on
10-18 April 2010, when Hans-Peter, HB9BXE and a large group of
operators from Switzerland, Germany and Vietnam will be active as
3W6C from Con Co Island. Further information is expected in due
course. For the time being, please visit www.3w6c.qrv.ch/
and consider supporting the project with a donation. [TNX HB9BXE]

4W - Chris, VK4FR works for the Australian Armed Forces and is
currently stationed in Dili, East Timor (OC-148) through October.
He operates SSB and digital modes as 4W6FR in his spare time. QSL
via VK4FW. [TNX VK4FW]

8Q - Pierre, HB9QQ is now active as 8Q7QQ from the Maldives until 11
July. He operates on 50183 kHz in JT65A mode (first period) around
moonrise and moonset in search of Sporadic E and EME contacts.
Other activities include 30, 17 and 12 metres. QSL via mome call.
[TNX HB9PL]

9Y - The Trinidad and Tobago Amateur Radio Society (TTARS) will be QRV
during the IARU HF World Championship (11-12 July), probably as
9Y4HQ (callsign to be confirmed). IOTA Chasers please note that
activity will take place from two different locations, one on
Trinidad (SA-011) and the other on Tobago (SA-009). The station on
Tobago is most likely to operate on 40 and 80 metres. [TNX The
Daily DX]

CT9 - Look for CT9/DB2TR, CT9/DK7TM, CT9/DL1CW, CT9/DL1SBF and CT9/DL3ZH
to operate SSB, CW and RTTY from Madeira (AF-014) on 10-15 July,

Contest (25-26 July) as EJ1DD from Clare Island (EU-121). QSL via
EI7CC. Before and after the contest, on 23-27 July, look for the
individual operators using EJ prefixes. [TNX EI7CC]

FT5G - The much anticipated DXpedition to Glorioso (FT5GA) has been
postponed again, hopefully at the end of August. The main cause
for this unexpected postponement is a stability problem of the
runway on Grande Glorieuse, which must be fixed in early July in
order to allow safe landings. However, the silver lining is that
two more operators (David, F8CRS and Bernard, F5LPY) will be able
to join F4EGS, F5IRO, F5PRU, F5RQQ and F5TLN. They still expect to
remain on the island for about three weeks, and to have four
stations active 24/7 (three on the HF bands and one on 6 metres).

PACIFIC TOUR —> Gerben, PG5M reports that the dates for his September
operations from Kiribati and Tuvalu [425DXN 947] have been swapped. The
updated schedule is as follows:
06-07 September Fiji requested call 3D2G
08-14 September Western Kiribati T30G

be posted at www.dx.to/ [TNX PG5M]

DX SUMMIT —> In the process of making the DX Summit service more focused
on younger user segments and non-amateur radio population, two features
have been added recently to the Radio Arcala (OH8X) DX Summit portal
(www.dxsummit.fi/). Each spotting and spotted callsign is
automatically linked to qrz.com, providing a more human link to the
personal profiles of people and to their pictures. Additionally, each line
carries the name of the DXCC country spotted.
In a few months time, custom selected filters will be provided to the
public allowing users to receive personalized spots. While initially the
selected spots will be sent to your personal e-mail address, the ultimate
aim is to offer an SMS (short message service) option to DX Summit users.
This service is a non-profit exercise for Radio Arcala, but donations will
be gratefully accepted. A Help Desk for regular users and for S/W
developers is being set up, and support is currently channelled through the
relevant button: donations will be used to help fund exclusively the DX
Summit Help Desk function, and OH8X will send you a Radio Arcala wall
calendar postpaid to those who donate. Support related to the calendar is
limited to the months of July and August 2009. [TNX OH8X]

NCDXF —> The Northern California DX Foundation Board of Directors is
pleased to announce the appointment of Ed Muns, W0YK, as an Advisor to the
NCDXF Board of Directors. Ed’s primary duty, along with Doug Bender, WW6D,
will be working with the NCDXF website (www.ncdxf.org). Since May
2008, NCDXF has provided financial help to 4W6R (Timor Lorosa’e), VK9XWW
(Christmas Island), VK9CJW (Cocos-Keeling), OJ0B (Market Reef), VK9DWX
(Willis Island), A5100A (Bhutan), E44M (Palestine), FW5RE (Wallis &
Fortuna), K5D (Desecheo Island), VK9LA (Lord Howe Island) and S04R (Western

August 2007. Please note that the correct QSL route is via K5WW. [TNX K5WW]

QSL VK9LA —> “After much haggling with the Australian Customs Department,
we have finally received the QSL cards from Czech Republic”, Bill Horner,
VK4FW says. He had planned to have all direct QSLling done by the end of
June, but this is no longer possible. On 2 July Bill left home for a
two-month family holiday. He processed and mailed as many cards as he could
before leaving, so “many of you will receive your cards within a few days,
but there will be also many that will not”. Please be patient.

web site has been updated. Twelve different galleries include cards for the

still needed and your participation is encouraged - please visit
LesNouvellesdx.fr and send your comments to lesnouvellesdx[kringelis]free[taskas]fr
[TNX F6AJA]

TOP LISTS —> The latest Topband, Topmode and Toplist listings are now

information, to Erminio Pandocchi, I2EOW (i2eow[kringelis]fastwebnet[taskas]it)

VY1JA QRT —> Jay, VY1JA (N8JA) says his work stint in VY0 has concluded,
and he is back home in the Yukon. His last logged QSO was made on 19
October 2008 and he is retiring from amateur radio. His station has been
dismantled, and he is giving/selling everything to “younger Yukon hams”.
Steve, N3SL will continue to keep his logs and answer QSLs, while Akio,
JA3JM handles QSLling for Japan. [TNX N3SL]

WHQS AWARD —> “QTC”, the Polish Amateur Radio Journal, sponsors the 2009
W-HQ-S award for working at least ten HQ stations during the upcoming IARU
HF Contest. Rules and picture of the certificate can be found at
www.skjkc.pl/pga/index.php?go=news&dzial=swiat&id=…… [TNX SP2FAP]

ZK2V —> Chris, ZL1CT reports that, despite “flat” band conditions, he
made 15817 QSOs (including 1279 QSOs on RTTY) 160, 80, 60, 40, 30, 20, 15
and 12 metres during his recent ZK2V DXpedition to Niue
(www.zk2v.com/). Jeff, N8CC was the overall leader with 16
band-slots out of a possible 20. QSL via N3SL, direct or bureau. All QSOs
have been uploaded to LoTW, resulting in more than 2000 QSO matches.

Special information about DXCC Card Checking in Friedrichshafen, Germany:

Once again DXCC card checking will be done at Ham Radio Friedrichshafen.
Card checking will occur during Friday, Saturday and Sunday June 26 through
28. Like in previous years they will also check QSL cards for 160m and
deleted entities. The card checker will inform you about the necessary fees.
Payments can be done cash (Euro or US Dollar), with cheque or credit card.

Changes in the 40m bandplan
—————————
The extension of the 40m band up to 7200 kHz was reason for the last IARU
Region 1 Conference to change the band plan as well. The upper limit for the
exclusive CW portion was raised from 7035 to 7040 kHz. Momentarily there are
still many activities below 7040 kHz (e.g. PSK31) according to the old band
plan. The whole portion between 7040 and 7050 kHz is reserved for narrow-
band digital modes with signals with a bandwidth up to 500 Hz but NOT for
SSB contacts. The range from 7050 to 7060 kHz is designated to support all
digital modes with a bandwidth up to 2700 Hz. All SSB operations shall be
relocated to 7060 kHz and up (especially with more digital activities).
A similar situation can be found on other bands as well, like on 80m above
3600 kHz.

A35, TONGA. Paul, A35RK, continues to be active as A35RK/p from Vava’u
Island (OC-064). He informs OPDX that there is “no definite departure
date.” He has also mentioned that he submitted the April/May A35RK/p
log (OC-064) to Bob, W7TSQ. This log includes activity in the CQ WPX
CW Contest this past weekend. As far as LoTW submissions, Bob, W7TSQ,
informed OPDX that since LoTW does not show/give credit for IOTA, Paul
is combining his /P log with the regular A35RK log as he is still Tonga.
He also mentioned that there is a possibility that some QSOs between
May 20-24th, have an error in the time. Most are probably CW contacts.
Paul also informed us of the problem and states, “There appears to be
a problem with the ‘QSO time’ element in the computer logbook entry.
Some contacts appear to be exactly ‘one hour off’ the actual time of
QSO.” So, anyone with a LoTW problem or needing an IOTA card, showing
OC-064, can contact Bill at: W7TSQ[kringelis]AOL[taskas]COM
He can supply cards that will show the IOTA information if needed. As
usual an SASE/SAE with postage (green stamps) will be answered direct.
Bill states, “Bureau cards will be awhile as I probably will not send
again before fall. LoTW is preferred as it is less work for me!”

QSL INFO AND NEWS…………………
With all the changes going on in the postal systems, it is time to
check out Bill’s, W9OL, great IRC Chart Web page. It is a great place
to see who takes IRCs, green stamps and who does not. Give it a look
at: www.qsl.net/w9ol/IRC_Chart.htm

K5D QSL STATUS: QSL Manager Bob, N2OO, reported on June 2nd, the
following update:
“OQRS - We finished OQRS requests received through about May 4th.. We
will resume OQRS QSL processing again shortly, and we will post the
dates on the QSL Information link found at the K5D Web site www.k5d.us
when we do resume. OQRS continues to be available for QSL requests.
Info for OQRS can also be found on the QSL Information link.

DIRECT MAIL: We are now focusing on the direct mail in the same order
as the mail was received. We are answering donors first just to be
fair to those who added a little something with their QSL. We also
TRY to catch notes that tell us that you contributed in advance of the
operation, but we don’t always catch those notes. If we miss yours,
we apologize. The DIRECT MAIL processing trudges forward. So, we
appreciate everyone’s patience. I continue to do the log processing
after which the QSLs will be mailed gradually by members of my QSL
processing team. We are not doing larger bulk mailings in order to
keep the cards flowing into the mail. It will surely be a few months
before we can become current. It’s hard to get ahead when you are
still receiving some 50 pieces of mail on average every day.

As of June 2nd we have confirmed 26,353 QSOs.

LoTW UPDATE: After careful consideration, and cautious investigation
into the LoTW process, I have decided that we will be able to upload
CONFIRMED QSOs ONLY to LoTW. This will be done in larger sized batches
as time allows while we continue to process QSLs. When the first batch
is uploaded, I will post the information on the QSL Information link
found at the K5D Web site www.k5d.us. I expect to do it within the next
week. QRX

In the past, we just uploaded to LoTW one time about one year after the
DXpedition. This was done for obvious reasons. Now that I have become
familiar with how to do partial log uploads to LoTW, we should be able
to satisfy those who want their QSOs in LoTW. By only uploading confirmed
QSOs (in batches), we think that this is a fair compromise that is a
win/win for everyone involved. We are considering other options for the
“next one”. But for THIS one, this is what we will be doing. We will
upload the balance of the full log in early 2010.

I ask you all to be patient! Since cards are going out in the mail
frequently and in much smaller batches, you can expect to hear of people
getting their cards continuously. Be assured that we are continuing the
QSL operation on a daily basis. It is just going to take time.

PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT THE QSL MANAGER ABOUT QSL ISSUES. IF YOU DO, YOU
WILL ONLY BE REFERRED TO THE K5D WEB PAGE FOR CURRENT QSL STATUS. WHEN
THINGS CALM DOWN, I WILL BE HAPPY TO ADDRESS ANY CONCERNS. QRX. Visit
www.k5d.us for all information!”
73 Bob Schenck, N2OO QSL Manager K5D Desecheo 2009

1652 INFO. Over the past weekend (June 5-7th), special callsigns were
active on several different bands that were good towards the “Roskilde
1658 Award”. For information on the callsigns, and upcoming operations
(times and frequencies), please look at the activities calendar on
the award Web site at: www.sk7bq.com/roskilde

QSL for OZ5FYN will be sent for all QSOs via the EDR bureau. This

Egeskov Slot (Castle) on June 7th. OZ5FYN grid locator was JO55FE,
and the island reference number is EU-172. There is no Danish CASOTA
reference number (for the first Castle activation).

NEW QSL MANAGER. Randy, W5UE, is now the new QSL manager for 9V1YC,
9V9HQ and N1YC/VK9X. After many years of excellent service as James’
QSL Manager, Joe, N5ID, is handing over duties to Randy in order to
recuperate after an extended illness in hospital. W5UE has all the
logs, blank cards and pending QSL requests for all of James’ callsigns,
so feel free to check his Web site for periodic updates and status of
QSL requests at: w5ue.net/qsl-w5ue.html

ADDED NOTE. Randy, W5UE, states, “It was brought to my attention that
many QSL Manager Data Bases still contain entries for some of James’
old calls to N5ID. Both Joe and James indicate a request hasn’t been
received for any of these for years, but we will continue to honor
any requests that may be needed in the future… so, please update
your QSL Manager Data Bases for any of the following calls from N5ID
to W5UE: 9V0YC, 9V8YC, KB1CM/VR2, KB1CM/VS6, KB1CM/ZS, KH8/KB1CM,
VR2/KB1CM and VS6/KB1CM. Please bear in mind all of these logs are on
paper only and will require extra processing time since I’ll probably
have to manually print cards as well.”

TO4G, GLORIOSO ISLAND (Update). Didier, F5OGL, announced this past week
as indicated several weeks ago, no civilian will be included in the crew
which is going to Gloriosos, next month. He states, “It had been confirmed
that it will be first a military mission. Nothing was possible to do to
make changes in this Forces Authorities decision.” He also announced the
final crew/operators list: Yves Michel/F5PRU, Jean Marc/F5RQQ, Freddy/
F5IRO, Philippe/F4EGS and Sylvain/F5TLN. Didier thanks the F6KOP Provins
ARC for the loan of three stations to be active on the air and a fourth
that will be set up and could be used on no particular modes or bands.
Didier ends his press release by saying, “Mission permitting, the crew
will appear in the two major July contests, the IARU HF and the RSGB
IOTA. Know that the crew, instead of maintenance jobs, has another
assistance mission by the Armies Information and Public Relation group
which will go to Glorioso along with us. This group is composed of an
Officer, a director and a cameraman. The callsign is not known yet, but
it is expected in the next days.” More information is forthcoming. Look
for updates on their Web page at: glorieuses2008.free.fr

VK, AUSTRALIA (4 LETTER SUFFIX). Eddie, VK4AN, (Father of VK4FRAJ) reports:
“There is still much reluctance and confusion amongst contesters regarding
VK 4-letter suffix calls… especially in CW contests! My son is probably
the ONLY VK with a 4-letter suffix that operates on CW, and is VERY
frustrated when contesters keep asking if his call is 2-letters or
3-letters… and one even accused him of being ‘a commercial station’
and refused to work him! 4-letter suffixes are issued to ‘Foundation-class’
hams (similar to the US novice-class). ALL Foundation class suffixes begin
with an ‘F’ plus 3 more letters. They have a maximum of 10-watts power on
80-40-15-10m CW-SSB only and must use commercially made equipment. My son’s
call is VK4FRAJ. He really enjoys CW but is ready to stop contesting due
to the frustration of others NOT knowing that Australia issues 4-letter
suffixes!! PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD THAT VK issues 4-LETTER SUFFIXES… and
that the only one that we know of that is on CW is VK4FRAJ (not VK4FJ,
not VK4RAJ, not VK4FRA, not VK4FR, not VK4FRJ… etc…). ‘Raj’ said he
would appreciate it if contesters would listen for his QRP CW signal and
to please realize that he has a 4-letter suffix (VK4FRAJ).”

VP2M, MONTSERRAT. Bill, W5SJ, will be active from here possibly as VP2MSJ
(TBA), July 14-21st. Activity will be on 80m, 60m and 6 meters using CW,
SSB and possibly JST. However, he will concentrate on the CQWW VHF Contest
(July 18-19th) on 6 meters. His equipment is an ICOM 7000, w/250 watts,
into a 5 element yagi (for 6m) and a Carolina Windom (for 80/60m). QSL
via his home callsign direct with current IRC or SASE.

ZY0, FERNANDO DE NORONHA. Just a reminder that operators Anderson/PY2TNT,
Fabio/PY2AAZ/AC2AC, Alex/PY2WAS and Bob/N6OX will be active as ZY0F from
Fernando de Noronha Island (SA-003), from June 10-15th. Activity will be
on 160-10 meters including 60/30/17/12 meters (60m under temporary licensed
granted by the Brazilian Government) using CW and SSB. QSL via PY2WAS, by
the bureau or direct. This DXpedition is sponsored by Spiderbeam Antennas.
