more likely a “BUSTED CALLSIGN”. As always, you never know - “Work
First Worry Later” (WFWL).

2008 A SPOTLESS YEAR! Lee, KH6BZF/7J1AAP, propagation guru, informed
OPDX that “We have experienced some very Sunspot lacking days during
2008.” There were 272 spotless days out of the 366 days (Leap Year) or
74.37% of the year’s days! August and December were the worst months
with 31 and 28 spotless days, respectively. June and November were the
best months with 19 and 15 spotless days, respectively. The rest of the
months (of the year) were all in the twenties.

2008 DX SOUND BITES! Tom, K8CX, has done it again. He has provided DXers
with 120 memorable DX sound clips from 2008. Visit Tom’s famous “HAM
GALLERY” Web at: hamgallery.com/dx2008
While there also check out some of his other features on his Web page,
such as: Rare DX Sound Clips of the past, QSL Card Museum, Dayton Photo
Galleries and Tribute to Silent Key Ham Operators.

2009 DX MARATHON (Now Underway!). John, K9EL, Program Manager of the CQ
DX Marathon, reports: “The 2009 edition of CQ Magazine’s 2009 edition of
the DX Marathon is now underway! Each year from January 1 to December 31,
CQ Magazine sponsors a challenge to work as many countries and zones as
possible in the calendar year. For complete rules and submission information,
please see our web site at: www.dxmarathon.com. The 2009 official DX
Marathon score sheet is now available for download. Remember to submit
your 2008 scores by January 31, 2009.”

was cancelled due to transportation problems. He is also planning a
personal holiday with ham gear to Rodriguez Island (3B9), in July, and
a return trip to Agalega Island (3B6) in November. The callsigns will
be 3B7FQ, 3B9FQ, and 3B6FQ. QSL all three operations via K5XK at his
new address per instructions on QRZ.com. More details will be provided
as they become available. Meanwhile, Rachid is often active on all bands,
40-10 meters using CW and SSB (from Mauritius).

8Q, MALDIVES. Just a reminder that Andy, G7COD, will be operational for
his fifth time from the Island of Embudu in the Kaafu Atoll (AS-013) using

“Dear Fellow DXers,
Reluctantly, due to the current U.S. economic situation, the DXpedition
team has decided to postpone the CY0 DXpedition planned for 2009. While
we are hopeful to reorganize the DXpedition {possibly for 2010}, we have
decided that rather than tie up the funds so graciously made available
by our sponsors, we will return donations received so the sponsorship
may be available to other DXpeditions for this year. Any sponsoring
organization may feel free to contact me with any questions regarding
the matter. We are hopeful that our kind sponsors will be willing to
renew their sponsorship when the Dxpedition is able to be reorganized
in the future. The sabledx.com website will remain functional for the
time being. Wishing all good DX and 73.
Sincerely, Duane Traver, WV2B Team Leader”

NO LONGER THE QSL MANAGER FOR CT3BX. Hermann, HB9CRV, announced that
as of December 31st, 2008, he is no longer the QSL manager of CT3BX.
No new QSL Manager has been nominated and the logs are closed.

QSL UPDATES FOR HC8N and K5S (NA-082). Randy, W5UE, reports that all
direct requests received for HC8N as of December 19th, have been answered
and are in the mail. The remaining incoming QSLs of 2008 for HC8N should
be in the mail by January 5th. QSL cards for K5S/K5Z, East Ship Island,
MS (IOTA NA-082) activity in October have been received from the printer
and direct requests have started going out. The K5S team was expected to
have a “QSL Party” on January 3rd and the remaining direct requests
received to date should be answered then. Randy states, “I have also
started accepting online requests for direct cards for stations I manage.
The process is fairly simple. Make an online donation via PayPal to
cover my postage/card costs and send me QSO data via E-mail. My hope
is that this method will be more cost effective and efficient for both
you and me as manager. Please see my Web page for details at:
w5ue.net/qsl-w5ue.html
I welcome any feedback you might have on this process. Bureau requests
are now being answered via the GlobalQSL service. Several thousand
backlogged HC8N requests have already been entered and should be finding
their way into the bureau system soon. I apologize for my lack of bureau
responses since hurricane Katrina… this should put me back on track.”

HAVE PATIENCE! QSL cards are still being received for the many UA4WHX
operations. Vlad is still sending them out.

and some international operators will activate Kerkennah Island (AF-073)
using the callsign TS7C between January 8-19th (2009). This 12 day
operation would not be possible without the help of Mustapha, DL1BDF.
According to the latest press release (edited) by Maurice, F5NQL: “All
the luggage is packed and sorted by 25kg parcels (one per operator).
Mustapha, DL1BDF, team member, was a great help to so we could obtain
the use of the special callsign TS7C. As indicated in “Press Release No.1,
some new comers in the DXpedition have been included in the team, to
permit them to get some more skill, operating side by side with long time
experienced DXpeditioners. They are the future operators of F6KOP next
expeditions. We ask your indulgence for them; they are learning what to
do in the pile-ups, and for some of them, TS7C will be their first
DXpedition. We will stay on Chergui Island (IOTA AF-073 and WLOTA 3459),
in the Kerkennah Group. Their departure is scheduled from Paris, on
January 8th, in the early morning. The team will begin to set-up the
first station immediately when they arrive at the Kerkennah Hotel. So,
the first signals are expected the same day at the end of the afternoon
or early in the evening. The departure from Kerkennah is scheduled very
early in the morning of the 19th. So the operation end will happen sometime
around 1800 or 1900z, in the evening of the 18th. As usual, one station
will continue to be on the air in the evening as late as possible. For
the new bands and/or modes hunters, we will be operating on the HF bands,
160-10m, using CW, SSB, FM, and the Digital modes (RTTY, PSK31, BPSK,
SSTV). We will pay special attention on the lower bands, 160/80m. Of course
you’ll find operators on the other bands and modes. Six stations will
operate at the same time, 24 hours a day. Sometimes it will be possible
to hear TS7C on the same band but different modes. The antenna farm will
consist of vertical and wire antennas for the lower bands and Spiderbeams
for 40-10m. Since the first press release the team had to be changed a
little. The complete team going to Tunisia has been finalized and the

50 MHz allocated to amateur radio in Switzerland

The Swiss authorities will allocate the 50 MHz band to amateur radio on a
secondary basis by Jan 1, 2009. All Swiss and foreign CEPT class licensees
may send with 100 watts PEP on 50-52 MHz without any antenna restrictions.
Primary users may not be disturbed which includes the Ticino since there are
still some TV stations active in the VHF band I in Northern Italy.

Prize drawing among participants of the WAE60 Marathon

Interesting prizes will be drawed among those participants who submitted a
log for the WAE60 Marathon. The random generator for the prize winners will
be activated by a clueless round participant during the DL and DIG thursday
broadcast on 3770 kHz (+/- QRM) starting around 1800 UTC on Dec 11, 2008.
The WAE celebrated its 60th anniversary this year which was a good reason
to organize a WAE60 Marathon lasting from Aug 9 until Sep 14, 2008.

2008 DX MARATHON. John, K9EL, Program Manager for the CQ DX Marathon,
informs OPDX that there are only a few days left in the 2008 version of
the CQ Magazine DX Marathon! He states, “Each year from January 1st to
December 31st, CQ Magazine sponsors a challenge to work as many countries
and zones as possible in the calendar year. This year’s edition ends
soon, but there is still time to fill in some missing countries and
zones.” For complete rules and submission information, please see the
following Web site at: www.dxmarathon.com

5K0, SAN ANDRES. Operators Cal/WF5W, Mike/K5UO (both members of the
Texas DX Society), and Rob/HK3CW will be going to San Andres Island as
a Multi/Single entry for the CQWW 160m CW Contest (January 24-25th). The
callsign will be 5K0CW. After the contest they should be on other CW
bands during the daylight hours. They will also try to be active on
RTTY. The trio is expected to be there a week before returning to Bogota.
This is the second TDXS related trip to this island; this time focusing
on 160 meters. The 160 meter antennas are a modified BC-Special and a
K9AY for receiving.

and a vertical for the other bands. QSL only via his home callsign or
the info on QRZ.com.

6W, SENEGAL. Tom, DL2RMC, will be active as 6W/DL2RMC or possibly a 6V
callsign between January 16-29th. His activity will be holiday style
but will include the CQ WW 160m CW Contest (January 24-25th). QSL via
DL1RTL.

A6, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES. Philippe, F5LTB/9Q1TB, who announced back in
August that after 5 years he is leaving the Democratic Republic of Congo
(DRC), is expected to move to the United Arab Emirates (A6) in late
January. He has already applied for an A6 licence. He states that he
will depart from DRC on December 20th (he was expected to leave in
September), and go to Paris on the 21st. Philippe will be in France until
January 18th and then he will fly to Dubai. Meanwhile, his activity from
DRC will be limited (home station is being fully dismantled; activity
from his office will be during his mornings between 0630-0700z on 14114
kHz and afternoons between 1530-1600z on 21188 kHz). Last QSO will be
on December 19th. He hopes to obtain an A6 callsign in a reasonable amount
of time. His QSL Manager will continue to be SM5DJZ.

DXCC NEWS. Bill Moore, NC1L, ARRL Awards Branch Manager, reports that
the following operations are approved for DXCC credit:
VK9DWX - Willis Island; 2008 Operation

meters using CW, SSB, RTTY and all the digital modes with a maximum
power of 1KW. They will have 3 stations on the air active with beams,
verticals and wire antennas. They state, “Even if early January is not
a a good period for VHF, they will monitor 6 and 2 meters and try any
contact.” The team includes the following 6 members: Simone/IZ0BTV,
Bello/IZ0EGM, Giorgio/IZ4AKS, Cortesi/IZ4DPV, Pasquale/IZ8IYX and Vini/

KOSOVO NEWS (Press Release by Martti, OH2BH)…………..
THE REPUBLIC OF KOSOVO ENTERS A NEW PHASE AS OF DECEMBER 9, 2008
“EULEX will switch on and UNMIK will switch off”, as EULEX’s head put it
today! www.eulex-kosovo.eu
It was just a few days ago in the United Nations Security Council
where the UN Secretary-General’s fresh report on Kosovo highlighted the
considerable progress made in Kosovo since its independence in February
of this year. All Council members supported the decision by the Secretary-
General to adapt the UN’s role to this new, positive reality by accelerat-
ing the downsizing of the UN Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) and the transfer
of rule of law authorities to the European Union’s mission, EULEX as of
December 9, 2008.
There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that the Republic of Kosovo, as it
is called in UN terms, is there to stay as it is recognized by fifty-three
UN member states today. Even those European countries not recognizing
Kosovo because of their own minorities, voted unanimously to let the EULEX
take over the next phase of the new country’s development work. This is
also another historical event where, for the first time, the European
Union is working together and with the United States on a peace settlement
issue.
This same day also signifies a wonderful occasion to the 2008 Nobel
Peace Prize Laureate, Martti Ahtisaari, who acted as the UN Special
Envoy for Kosovo and whose “peace roadmap” is now in implementation.
Mr. Ahtisaari has served as mediator in many complex negotiations in
which there is no standard outcome. Kosovo’s road to independence marks
a unique case in which the only winners are the people of Kosovo. We all
salute Mr. Ahtisaari for his mission under complicated circumstances and
congratulate him on winning the Nobel Peace Prize which he will receive
on this same day. Amateur Radio operators are grateful to Mr. Ahtisaari
for his support of Amateur Radio Mission Goodwill Kosovo currently under
implementation in Kosovo.
A special postage stamp is issued in Finland on December 10th in Mr.
Ahtisaari’s honor, and the next 1000 direct QSL envelopes released by
OH2BH/OH2BN/OH2TA/OH2UA for YU8/OH2R, CN2B, CU2X, FJ/OH2AM, OH0X, OH8X,
OJ0B, TC4X will bear that stamp.” Visit the following Web page to see
the stamp:

OOOOPPPSSS!! (CORRECTION) There was a typo in last week’s OPDX.886 under
“KH8, AMERICAN SAMOA.” We stated that Larry’s, AH8LG, callsign was KH8LG
which was incorrect.

OP0, ANTARCTICA. Paul, ON3PC, who got his license only a short time ago,
is expected to be active as OP0LE from the new Belgian Antarctic station
“Princess Elisabeth” (www.antarcticstation.org) situated on Dronning
Maud Land. Activities can be expected between mid-December and mid-February
of 2009.

QRZ.COM TO CHANGE. Fred, AA7BQ, QRZ Founder, announced that QRZ.COM will
be changing their database/Web site. He states, “Today we’re pleased to
make an initial announcement about a new version of our online callsign
database that will soon replace our existing pages. Internally, we’ve
been calling it QRZ 2.0, however, it will soon be known simply as QRZ as
it becomes the system default. The new database includes a fresh new
layout plus a number of new features and information details that were
not previously available. In addition, the new callsign pages are custom-
izable by the user to include colors, fonts, and multiple pictures.
We’ve also included the GridFinder as a mainstream part of our data.
Additionally, we have made vast improvements in our geo coordinate data-
base, and we now include regional mapping information for nearly every
callsign, both USA and DX! Once we’ve had sufficient time to test the
new system we will eventually replace all of the callsign pages with the
new format.” To see an example of their new pages for AA7BQ, go to:
www.qrz.com/db/AA7BQ
To see your callsign page under the new format, just use the URL/code:
www.qrz.com/db/your_callsign
PLEASE NOTE: You must have Javascript enabled on your browser to take
full advangage of what these new pages have to offer. Fred also mentions,
“If you’d like to take a sneak peek at the new editing features as well,
you must join our Beta Tester’s Group (it’s free) by clicking
(you must be logged
in). Your request will be approved ASAP. Your comments and constructive
criticism are welcome. Please don’t write to tell us that ‘you prefer the
old version’, or that you ‘don’t like the changes’ because, frankly, we’re
determined to move forward. This is the first major rewrite of the QRZ
database in several years and a lot of new technology has come of age
since the current system made its debut. This project started more than
a year ago and parts of it have already been running in the background
for some time. Now, however, we’re finally ready to start showing off
the new look and get some feedback from the users. We appreciate your
feedback! Please don’t be bashful! We think you’re going to like it!”

Re: HAMRADIO_LY: nemaloni staigmena paste

Aciu uz puikia ideja Gintai,

Mano paste turiu tokia simpatiska YL Jurgita, kuria kartais pavaisinu kava
ir dar kai kuom.
Manau po CQ WW as eisiu eilini karta su ja kur nors.
Pabusiu “snipas” ir pranesiu “slapta” informacija tiems kas to pageidaus.
Manau problemu nekils, nes bent iki siol su ja nebuvo.
Gal tik pasto virsininke turi ta info? Tada jau bus sudetingiau, nes ji ne
mano skonio, o ir sveria ko gero “centneri” jei ne daugiau.
Nenustebkite, kad LY5W nera paminetas QSL-biuro ataskaitose, nes savo QSL
atiduodu vienam zmogui is Vilniaus. Jis toliau rupinasi ju likimu. Ka pats
tiesiai, ka per Sauliu LY2MQ, ka i QSL biura.
Del direct serviso, apie kuri rasiau anksciau, ko gero susilaikysiu, nes
manau anksciau-veliau busiu apkaltintas, kad kazko nenusiunciau, o
apmokejima gavau.
Aciu LY2BET, LY3A, LY1CX uz supratima. Gal geriau pranesiu, ka zadu siusti
DIRECT ateinancia savaite (su apmokejimu).
Dabar guli neuzklijuoti vokai: VU7SJ, VU7NRO, VU4MY, VU4RG, TF4M, ZC4LI,

Jeigu turite jiems ka nors, atsiuskite savo israsytas QSL man, idesiu i
