HAMRADIO_LY: Leonidai (ne iljyciai)

Lapkricio 17 vakare apie 21.30-23.00 UTC gali buti linksma 144MHz diapazone.

Leonidu meteoru srauto saltinis - kometa Tempel-Tuttle, kuri savo labai
istestoje elipsineje orbitoje aplink saule kas 33 metai praskrenda netoli
saules ir matoma zemeje. Priartejus prie saules, apie 4km skersmens kometa
susidedanti is ledo ir smulkiu medziagos daleliu pradeda intensyviai tirpti,
tos daleles atsipalaiduoja ir issibarsto sukurdamos meteoru srauta, kuris
toliau skrieja mazdaug kometos orbita, tik palaipsniui vis labiau
issisklaido ir suleteja. Paskutini karta Tempel-Tuttle lankesi 1998 metais,

Leonidu meteorai ilekia i zemes atmosfera sunkiai suvokiamu 71km/sek
greiciu, smilteles dydzio meteoru degimas jau matomas plika akimi ir sukelia
30-60sek trukmes radijo atspindi, o zirnio dydzio meteoro pedsako sviesumas

apskaiciuoti, kad butent siemet zeme paklius i pati centra daleliu
susikaupimo, atsiradusio kometai priartejus prie saules 1466 metais.
Paskaiciuotas maksimumas Lapkricio 17, 21:43 UTC. Prognozuojamas ZHR
(meteoru skaicius/val) 500-1500, o tai yra daugiau negu “tradicinio”
aktyviausio metu Perseidu srauto maksimumas.

Leonidu radiantas (isivaizduojamas taskas danguje, is kurio atskrenda
QSO poziuriu i rytus jau galima bandyti, nes vidury trasos radiantas jau bus
virs horizonto. Dangaus stebetojams greiciausiai siemet nepasiseks nes
meteorologai zada tai nakciai debesis ir net lietu.

Meteoriniai QSO 2m diapazone daromi daugiausia skaitmenine moduliacija
FSK441 su programa WSJT, o kai radijo atspindziu pasidaro tikrai daug,
galima bandyti SSB apie 144200 ir net tradiciniuose DX dazniuose apie
144300.

3B7, ST. BRANDON ISLAND. Ron, K5XK, updates OPDX that Rachid, 3B8FQ,
will leave Mauritius by boat on Tuesday, August 11th, enroute for St.
Brandon (AF-015). Rachid will operate solo as 3B7FQ from August 12th
through the end of the month–and possibly a few extra days in early
September. Look for him on all bands, 30-10 meters, although Rachid
expects 40 and 20 meters to be most productive. He will use both CW
and SSB, as conditions allow. As in Rachid’s earlier travels to 3B6
and 3B7, operating time will be shared with his primary mission of
performing maintenance on the island’s meteorological equipment. He
expects to use the island’s G5RV and a vertical with a 100 watt trans-
ceiver powered by a 12 volt battery that will be charged daily. Rachid
likes to use “the 8s” whenever possible on CW. Here are his anticipated
frequencies:
CW - 7008, 10108, 14008, 18078, 21008, 24898 and 28008 kHz
SSB - 7050, 14191, 18141, 21241, 24941 and 28491 kHz

If future plans come together, Rachid may operate from 3B9 sometime
after his return and hopes to operate from 3B6 again in November. QSL
via K5XK, direct preferred.

3D2/C, CONWAY REEF (Update). Jan, DJ8NK, informs OPDX this past week
that they have added one more operator to the crew. Uwe, DJ9HX, is the
new added operator. Now with the fourth operator they will be able to
run 4 stations simultaneously in order to serve the pile-up. They have
also announced their callsign for the operation - 3D20CR. The callsign
of this DXpedition was issued to commemorate a DXpedition 20 years ago
when DK9KX as organizer and leader of a crew, which included today’s
member DJ9ON, visited this island for the first activation ever. The
DXpedition is still looking for sponsors. The total amount of the operation
is estimated at 64.000 USDs. For details/updates and on how to donate
funds for this operation, please visit their Web page at:
www.conwayreef2009.de

3DA0, SWAZILAND. Only a few more days to work 3DA0DJ, 3DA0TB, 3DA0MH,
3DA0VA, 3DA0MM and 3DA0EL. Activity is expected to end August 11th. QSL
via their home callsigns.

4J, AZERBAIJAN. Operators Gerard/F2VX and Yanick/FYFYD will be active as
4J/homecall, August 11-29th. Activity will be mainly HF bands using SSB.
QSL via their home callsign, direct (SAE + postage) or by the French Ref-
Bureau (please only this bureau).

4W, TIMOR-LESTE. No QSNs reported yet on Al, CT1GPQ, as 4W6AL from Timor
Lorosae. He will be there until October 3rd. Remember, this is “NOT A
DXpedition”! CT1GPQ will be in Timor-Leste with a Medical Team and radio
operations will take place only during his spare time. Activity will be
on 40/30/20/17 meters SSB, RTTY and preferably CW. Pilot station and QSL
Manager is Toze, CT1GFK. The pilot station will be in daily contact with
CT1GPQ. Any questions or suggestions should be sent to: star[kringelis]algarvedx[taskas]com
Activity logs will be online (possibly daily) on: algarvedx.com

6W, SENEGAL. Stan, EI6DX, will be active as 6W/EI6DX from Somone which
is located 70 km southeast of Dakar, between November 7-16th. He will
concentrate on the lower bands and CW. Stan will take part in JA DX
Contest. QSL via RX3RC, by the Bureau or direct. Look for updates at:
www.ei6dx.com/senegal

7P, LESOTHO (Update). You have until August 13th to work operators Pista/
HA5AO (7P8AO), Frosty/K5LBU (7P8CF), Laurent/W0MM (7P8MM), John/9M6XRO
(7P8OK) and Ben/DJ0YI (7P8YI). QSL 7P8OK only via M0URX, others via their
home callsigns. They will have a log search page after the conclusion of
their operations. For more details, please visit the Texas DX Society’s
Web site at: www.tdxs.net/7p8.html

A6, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES (Update). Philippe, F5LTB/9Q1TB, is now active
on the air as A65BI thanks to Abdullah, A61Q, for the support he gave to
obtain the necessary authorization from his landlord to erect an antenna
on the roof of the building. His activity has been on 20 meters SSB at
various times during the day. His QSL Manager will continue to be SM5DJZ,
direct ONLY (eQSL are welcome for eDX100, eWAS and eZ40). QSL design for
a standard QSL and an eQSL will be ready shortly. Watch QRZ.com for
updates.

A9, BAHRAIN. Dave, EI3IO, will be leaving Ireland and will move to Bahrain
for at least 2 years. He has not received his callsign yet but plans to
be active on 160m (especially during the winter) through the VHF bands.
Look for him on 20 meters starting in September. Hopefully more details
will be forthcoming. Visit his Web page at: EI3IO.com

CQ NEWS. A press release by Richard Moseson, W2VU, Editor of CQ Amateur
Radio, dated August 4th, states: “2008 CQ World Wide CW Contest Marks
Major Milestone for K0DQ Becomes Possibly the Only Person Ever to Win
All Six Major Ham Radio Contests — Scott Redd, K0DQ, operating the 2008
CW weekend of the CQ World Wide DX Contest from Aruba as P40Q, racked up
over a million more points than his closest competitor in the Single-
Operator Low Power Class, and became perhaps the only person ever to win
single-op world championships in all six major Ham Radio DX contests.
‘I don’t know of anyone else’ who has won all the major contests, said
CQWW Contest Director Bob Cox, K3EST, in announcing the results, which
will be published in the September issue of ‘CQ’ magazine.
Scott had his first taste of contest victory back in 1966, as a young
Navy officer posted to Uruguay and operating CX2CO in the phone weekend
of the CQ World Wide DX Contest. Over the succeeding years, Scott worked
his way through the Navy ranks to Vice Admiral and became Commander of
the Fifth Fleet, then served as a civilian in the Iraq Coalition
Provisional Authority and as Director of the National Counter terrorism
Center before retiring in late 2007. But Ham Radio and contesting were
never far away, and operating from Mexico as XE1IIJ in the early 1970s,
Scott won single-op world championships in the CQWW Phone Contest, the
ARRL DX Phone and CW Contests and the CQ WPX Phone Contest. Thirty years
later, when his professional life permitted a little more hamming time,
Scott added the WPX CW crown as P41P, operating from P43P’s station in
Aruba, in 2002. The only prize that eluded him — until now — was the
CQWW CW.
‘I’ve been trying like a son-of-a-gun to win (the) CQ World Wide CW,’
Scott commented in a 2008 interview with ‘CQ’. ‘I’ve come in number two,
I’ve come in number three, but I’ve never won that one…. so that’s
still my goal, every time I get close, in CQ World Wide CW, to win the
world.’
When informed that he had finally achieved that goal, K0DQ said, ‘I
guess the message is if you keep at it long enough good things happen.
In this case, four decades. It’s been a great ride … and it’s still
magic!’
CQ congratulates Scott — already a member of the CQ Amateur Radio
Hall of Fame, for his contesting achievements on top of all his other
achievements.”

CTU IN ENGLAND. Tim, K3LR, announces that if you missed CTU Dayton and
CTU Italy this year - here is another chance to attend ConTest University

The next CTU during the Hamvention in Dayton, Ohio, United States, will
be on May 13, 2010. Details at:
www.contestuniversity.com/main/page_home.html

FJ, ST. BARTHELEMY (NA-146). Operators Gary/W2VQ and his son Paul/WQ2N
will be active as FJ/W2VQ and FJ/WQ2N between August 18-25th. Activity
will be on 80-6 meters using CW, SSB and RTTY (possible PSK31). They
will be using only 100 watts into dipoles and beams. An online log will
be available during and after the operation at:
www.logsearch.org/lsd/logsearch.php?Switch=46
They will be listening for JA/AS and EU a lot, so listen!

two years starting this month, has received his new callsign on his 40th
birthday - FO8RZ. He was on the air this past week using a vertical
antenna. He was heard on 30 and 20 meters CW. He has other antennas
that will be set up later (wires for 80-40m, and a triband beam 20/15/10m).
Phil is still moving in, so they have a lot of things to do before being
active on the radio. QSL via LoTW or via F8BPN, either direct or via the
French Ref-Union Bureau. His Web page will be updated sometime soon at:
f5phw.chez.com

GB2/GB4/M0, ENGLAND. Members of Sands Amateur Radio Contest Group will
be operating a number of special event stations on Saturday, August 15th,
to celebrate the Galloways Society for the Blind’s “25th Anniversary of
the Cross Bay Walk” led by Queen’s Guide Cedric Robinson MBE. The walk
generally takes around 3 hours and needs the Queen’s Guide to navigate
between Arnside and Kents Bank safely because of the quicksands around
the bay that have taken many lives over the years. The first appointment
was in 1536. Cedric, who is the 25th appointed Queen’s Guide to the Sands
and local fisherman, has been leading the walks since 1963. The special
callsigns to listen out for are:
GB2GSB - Located at Arnside Knott which overlooks Arnside and a good
part of the walk.
M0SCG/M - Will be operating from the tractor which follows the walkers
and can be used if anybody becomes too exhausted or ill during
the walk.
GB4GSB - Located at the end of the walk at Kents Bank.

A special certificate is offered for amateurs and SWLs who work any of
the stations. To obtain a certificate, send an A4 SAE and a check for
2.50 (pounds) made out to SARCG, and send it to their QSL Manager G0VGS
(see QRZ.com or: Ian Maude, 21 Colwyn Avenue, Bare, Morecambe, Lancs,
LA4 6EQ. Once printing costs are covered, any money left over will be
donated to the Galloways Society for the Blind. For more details about
the walk, visit the following Web pages:

* PLEASE NOTE: The report “could” contain “Pirate/SLIM” operations or
more likely a “BUSTED CALLSIGN”. As always, you never know - “Work
First Worry Later” (WFWL).

3D2, FIJI (IOTA Op). Remember to look for Akira, JA1NLX, to once again
be active as 3D2YA from Mana Island (OC-121) in Mamanuca Group, between
June 29th and July 3rd. Activity will be on 80/40/30/20/17/15/12/10 meters
using CW and RTTY. QSL via his home callsign, by the Bureau or direct

3D2/C, CONWAY REEF. Hans, DK9KX (ex-3D2CR), reports that it has been 20
years since the first activation of Conway Reef (3D2CR), but he is happy
to announce another DXpedition to that remote and lonely island will take
place between October 3-11th. There will be 7 operators, and they will

postponed. A report indicates that Dani, EA4ATI, had to postpone his C21TI

humanitarian response to the internally displaced persons.” Dani informed
your OPDX editor that he hia already booked/rescheduled his flight for
Nauru. The dates for the DXpedition are for August 16-24th, and they

using the callsign GB0WFF for the World Flora and Fauna Award
(see www.wff44.com for award details), and using the
MC0SHL club callsign while erecting a tower for Rob, MW0RLJ.

NIAR PRESS RELEASE (YL Enters the Limca Book Of Records-2009). The NIAR
reports (edited): “Ms. Sadineni Yamini, VU2YAM, aged 22 years member of
National Institute of Amateur Radio (NIAR), Hyderabad, became the ‘first
Indian’ to participate in an International Dxpedition conducted in an
uninhabited Cocos Island of Costa Rica, Central America, during February
9-13th, 2008.
‘Limca Book of Records’ is the Indian equivalent to the Guinness Book
of World Records with emphasis on unique achievements of Indians within
the country and abroad. It’s a salute to all those Indians who want to
do something different and be remembered for their distinctive deeds.
Yamini, excelled in her achievements for using voice as well as digital
modes of amateur radio communication technology that enables sending e-mail
without internet from a remote location. Sponsored by NIAR and Austrian
Amateur Radio Society, she was also among the youngest and the only woman
of the 12 member team consisting of hams from USA, Europe and Asia.
Several national and international organizations have recognized and
acknowledged specific achievements made by Sadineni Yamini earlier. This
exceptional achievement now finds place in National Record 2009 of the
prestigious Limca Book of Records as per the communication received from
the Editor, Limca Book of Records.
Yamini took special interest in the field of amateur radio joining as
student member at NIAR and continued to pursue this activity with outmost
dedication. She continues to motivate youth to become partners in technology
development by exhibiting her skills and undertaking challenging expeditions
under extremely difficult circumstances in the field of amateur radio, which
will remain as an inspiration to younger generation.
Many national and international print and electronic media already covered
her achievement.
Recently, in the first week of June, she participated and excelled her
performance in the ‘Aila’ cyclone relief operations from a remote place in
West Bengal state in India.”

QSL INFO AND NEWS…………………
G3SWH QSL MANAGEMENT WEB SITE. Phil Whitchurch, G3SWH, reports: “Over
the past few days, I have had some problems with the ‘QSL request’ and
‘contact me’ functions of my web site as a result of my ISP changing
servers. However, I’m pleased to announce that these problems have all
been resolved and the web site is now fully functional.” Web page is:
www.g3swh.org.uk

QSL HQ9R via K5WW. Erik, K5WW, reports: “It seems that quite a few people
are still sending QSL for HQ9R to N6FF. Unfortunately, Dick, N6FF,
became a Silent Key in August of 2007. I have been taking care of HQ9R’s
QSL since then. Please send your QSL requests to me, K5WW.”

HAVE PATIENCE! More QSL cards were received this past week for the many
UA4WHX operations. Vlad is still sending them out.

VK9LA QSL UPDATE. Bill Horner, VK4FW, QSL Manager for VK9LA, informs:
“After much haggling with the Australian Customs Department and negotiating
with a customs clearance broker, we have finally received the QSL cards
from Czech Republic. Originally I envisaged having all direct QSLing done
by the end of June, however this is not possible now. On July 2nd I will
be away from home for 2 months on a family caravaning holiday. Prior to
going I am doing as many as is possible and doing daily postings. As such,
many of you will receive your cards within a few days, but there will be
also many that will not. Please be patient and do not flood me with email
questions. Every time I have to answer an email means less QSLing done
before departure. If you are one of the lucky ones that receive your QSL
card in the next few days and find missing QSOs, be advised it is because
they were not in the log.”

VY1JA QRT! Steve, N3SL, reports that he received an E-mail from “J”,
VY1JA (N8JA), on June 25th, and it states that J’s work stint in VY0-land
has concluded, and he is back home in the Yukon. The bad news, however,
is that he is retiring from Ham Radio. His note says his station has been
dismantled, and he is giving/selling everything to “younger Yukon hams.”
J’s last QSO in the log was 10/19/08. It’s sad to see him retire. He
gave many a ham many a “clean sweep.” Steve states, “I will continue to
keep his logs and answer QSLs. Akio, JA3JM, handles QSLing for JA.”

SILENT KEYS………………..
K8QOE - Ohio amateurs lost a great friend and dedicated ARRL Ohio
Section Manager on Saturday, June 20th. Joe Phillips, K8QOE,
suddenly became “SK” at the age of 68. He was a man of many
hats (Please read ARRL Special Bulletin ARLX008 and ARRL Letter
Vol. No. 25). He was also a DXer and a big “Cleveland Indians”
fan (two topics that your editor will miss talking with him
about). Ohio amateurs will surely miss Joe.

N0JT - John Trampler, N0JT, became a SK at age 85 on Monday, June
22nd. John was well known in the DX community and was a co-
founder of the “247 DX Group” along with Alan/WA4JTK (SK).
He also was a DXCC Honor Roll member and a ham for over 60
years.

sure if he will activate any islands there. After Turkey, Gab will team
up with Boyan, LZ1BJ, and activate Sveta Anastasiya Island (EU-181, will
also count for WLOTA LH-0035). He is expected to start a second island
tour from Croatia in September. Details will be forthcoming. QSL via
